Invasives
By displacing native plants and disrupting food webs and availability of food for wildlife, invasive plants have become a very serious threat to our ecosystems. They degrade habitats, inhibit forest regeneration, and degrade our water supply. Many even alter soil chemistry and inhibit other plants from growing in the area.
Invasive plants are very resilient and will grow in any type of soil, even in full shade. They are aggressive invaders, some, such as Kudzu, will grow up to one foot per day. Others will produce each year several million seeds in a single plant.
In this talk you will learn to identify the most common and prolific invasive plants around us. We will discuss their growing habits, reproduction methods, and the different ways with which you can help control their spread and protect our local biodiversity.
