Stitched Stories
Join Katherine Smith from Second Nature Arts for a fun and creative mixed-media workshop that blends the rich history of embroidery with the expressive art of collage! Inspired by the tradition of sewing circles, this hands-on program fosters togetherness, self-expression, and storytelling. Participants will start by creating a layered background using old magazines and books. Then, guided by prompts and working in a friendly, social setting, they’ll cut, glue, and stitch their unique designs.
We’ll wrap up the day with a sharing session where everyone can present their artwork and tell one another about the ideas/stories behind their creations. Come craft, connect, and create with us!

Katherine has been involved in educating all ages of people as a teaching assistant and teaching artist since 2016. Before she dove head first into her creative pursuits she was a swim instructor and coach for a decade. Her primary creative interests include collage-style recycled art, textiles, and photography. Katherine has extensive experience in the fiber world as a spinner and a weaver, creating intricate landscapes and color fields using natural materials such as wool, cotton, and flax. Repurposing scraps from her weavings, she spins new yarn to be made into art. She loves teaching kids and adults new skills and facilitating the exploration of their own creativity. Katherine currently attends the University of Massachusetts – Lowell for social sciences.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Great Barrington Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council.
